HeritAccess Database: a step forward in bringing Access to Rural and Wine Heritage Tourism

In a world where cultural heritage is often tucked away in remote corners, accessibility becomes a key factor in preserving and sharing these treasures with everyone. The HeritAccess Database emerges as a beacon of inclusivity, marking a significant stride towards ensuring that rural and wine heritage sites are well described based not only on touristic information but also on their accessibility features.

Conceived through the collaborative efforts of six organizations spanning five countries – Greece, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia, and Spain – the HeritAccess Database is a groundbreaking initiative born within the framework of the Erasmus+ Cooperation Project in adult education. Its mission is to facilitate access to culture and heritage in rural environments through an engaging and interactive digital experience of 5 selected sites, among the analysed ones.

The journey of creating this comprehensive database began with a year-long investigation into the accessibility of rural and wine heritage sites. Delving deep into the historical, artistic, and architectural significance of these locations, the project team meticulously selected 75 sites that epitomize the richness of our collective heritage.

But beyond mere selection, the project took a proactive stance by engaging with over 100 managers and staff of heritage sites to assess their current accessibility status. By understanding the challenges faced by these sites, HeritAccess aims to implement targeted solutions that enhance accessibility for all visitors, including those with disabilities.

The criteria for site selection were rigorous yet inclusive, emphasizing not only the historical and artistic value of the locations but also their accessibility features. From ancient ruins to picturesque vineyards, each site was chosen with the aim of providing an enriching experience for all visitors, regardless of their physical abilities.

Crucially, proximity to project partners was also considered, ensuring that the impact of HeritAccess would be immediate and widespread. By collaborating closely with local stakeholders, the project seeks to foster a sense of ownership and community involvement in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

As the project unfolds, exciting updates and next steps are already underway.

In essence, the HeritAccess Database is more than just a repository of information; it is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in making cultural heritage truly accessible to everyone. As we embrace the digital age, let us not forget the importance of preserving our roots and sharing our heritage with the world – one step, one site, at a time.
